The Big Day is the debut studio anthology by American rapper Chance the Rapper, released on July 26, 2019.[4] The album follows several mixtapes by the rapper including the reissue of his collaborative Merry Christmas Lil' Mama in 2017, and is his commencement solo project since Coloring Book in 2016.[5] The album was influenced by Take a chance's marriage, which occurred in March 2019.[half dozen] The album was met with positive reviews from critics,[7] [8] but received backfire from fans on social media and other internet communities.[9] [10] [11] The album debuted at number 2 on the United states of america Billboard 200, Chance'southward highest-charting entry to appointment.[12]
For the album the rapper worked with several songwriters that helped him writing the songs, including Darius Scott, Dwayne Verner, Jr., Greg Landfair, Nate Fox and Peter Wilkins.[xiii]
Recording [edit]
In a November 2016 interview, Adventure the Rapper stated: "I think what I'thousand working on now is an album."[14] In May and June 2018, American rapper and producer Kanye West released a set of 7-track albums as part of the Wyoming Sessions, producing five albums in collaboration with Pusha T, Kid Cudi, Nas, and Teyana Taylor. In July 2018, Take a chance announced that West was coming to Chicago to produce his debut anthology.[xv] West arrived in Chicago in mid-Baronial 2018 and began recording.[16] The duo later appear that their collaboration would be titled Good Ass Job.[17] At the aforementioned time, West began working on his ninth studio album Yandhi and shifted his focus to that project instead; West has no production credits on the released version of The Big Day.
Music and lyrics [edit]
The Big Day has been described by music journalists as a pop-rap[1] and gospel rap record.[18] NOW Magazine 'due south Richard Trapunski says it "presents a bigger and slicker version of [Chance the Rapper'southward] nostalgic gospel-rap sound",[19] while Stephen Porzio from Hot Press says it not merely features hip hop but too R&B and soul music.[20]
Lyrically, the album follows Chance on his wedding day, inspired by his real-life marriage to Kirsten Corley in March 2019.[21] Its predominant theme of family unit is explored with well-nigh songs about Kirsten and Chance'south family and children. The album features contributions from his brother Taylor Bennett, who raps on "Roo", and his begetter Ken Bennett, who helped co-write "Eternal". In the skits "Photo Ops" and "four Quarters in the Black", comedians John Witherspoon and Keith David play wise uncle characters to highlight the multigenerational attribute of weddings.[half dozen]
Artwork [edit]
The artwork for the album encompass features a jewel encrusted clear disc, reminiscent of a nuptials ring, referencing the album's wedding ceremony theme, and was created past artist Sara Shakeel. Chance the Rapper reached out to Shakeel via Instagram to commission a physical object in her unique Swarovski crystal-clad style to be photographed and used for the cover art.[22] Shakeel also created artworks for the rapper's installation "The Big Store".[23] Inside the album booklet, Julio Blanco provided photographs of Adventure and his family.
Marketing and sales [edit]
In March 2017, Hazard stated that he would sell his debut album, as opposed to the gratis release of his previous mixtapes.[24] On February 12, 2019, Chance tweeted "July" and shared a video on his Instagram revealing that he had "been making music" that fans could look to arrive the same month.[25] On June 27, Run a risk released a promotional video titled "The Side by side Chapter Begins", where a pre-order for the album was launched. His first ii mixtapes, 10 Day and Acid Rap, were also put up on music streaming services, and sold on vinyl alongside his third mixtape Coloring Book.[26] On July xvi, Hazard the Rapper announced the album's title, release date and revealed its cover during his interview on The Tonight Evidence Starring Jimmy Fallon.[four]
On Baronial iv, 2019, The Large Day debuted at number two on the Us Billboard 200 with 108,000 anthology-equivalent units, of which 27,000 were pure album sales in its kickoff week. It was Gamble'due south highest-charting entry and his 3rd release to hit the top x of the nautical chart.[12]

The Large Day was met with generally positive reviews, according to the aggregate website Metacritic. At the website, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from professional critics, the anthology received an boilerplate score of 71, based on 21 reviews.[nine] Aggregator AnyDecentMusic? gave information technology 6.eight out of 10, based on their assessment of the critical consensus.[27] The reception was described past journalists Shaad D'Souza (of The Fader)[36] and Ben Yakas (of Gothamist) equally "lukewarm".[37]
Reviewing in July 2019, Al Horner of The Guardian described The Big Solar day as "a candid, cutesy concept album based around his hymeneals", believing information technology "combines something one-time and something new, subtly expanding Chance'southward audio without ever straying too far from the sentimental gospel-pop center of his last release, Coloring Volume."[ane] Fred Thomas of AllMusic wrote that "Vivid, flawless production supports Run a risk's optimistic lyrics and cultivates an temper inundation with joy, wonder, and summery nostalgia."[28] Christopher Weingarten of Amusement Weekly concluded: "A primary lyricist, a musical omnivore, Chance and his family of producers and instrumentalists channel all the big emotions of the big day in a swirl of bliss, marital and otherwise."[31] In a less enthusiastic review, Danny Schwartz of Rolling Stone concluded that, "Despite its length, The Big Mean solar day is self-independent, at least past Chance's standards", considering it "narrower in emotional telescopic" than the 2016 mixtape Coloring Volume.[35] Dhruva Balram of NME said information technology is "a buoyant, cheerful project that looks back on his young, successful career through rose-tinted lenses but, ultimately, doesn't possess plenty depth amidst a hodgepodge of production and features that brand information technology also long-winded."[33]
The anthology and Take chances received criticism from fans on social media, spawning many Internet memes primarily about the anthology's focus on Chance's spousal relationship. Having expected music similar to his previous albums, many fans believed that the album was a regression for the rapper, finding his raps banal and his style childishly upbeat.[38] [39] YouTuber-music critic Anthony Fantano rated it a nada on a scale of 10,[38] finding the product "flat" and the raps having some of Chance'south "worst confined to engagement".[40] The rapper responded on Twitter to the criticism, maxim he believes that people wanted him to "impale himself".[10] [11]
Veteran music critic Robert Christgau believed The Big Twenty-four hours had go a "backlash victim", instead ranking information technology on his year-end list as 2019'southward third best album.[41] In his Substack-published "Consumer Guide" column, he explained that, "Since the rhyming may seem slack when you follow every give-and-take, why bother? ... [T]he opener's choral 'nosotros-back' intro and self-sufficient lyric lighten upward the room every time they come round, and that mood never dulls." While applauding the guest performances, Christgau added that the best raps belong to Chance on "Institute a Good One" and "Zanies and Fools": "Both celebrate his wedding day with a cred the cameos simply flesh out, a cred that will endure equally art even if the wedlock itself fails—this is showbiz, later all. Best wishes to the happy couple and all their progeny."[29]
